Thanks to more than 101,000 people signing our petition, MPs will debate our petition calling for a full, independent review of Council Tax and Stamp Duty in Westminster Hall on Monday 23rd November.
This is a major milestone, made possible by our supporters and the MPs who have backed the campaign. Thank you all!
Why this matters
Council Tax is still based on 1991 values, leaving households in less expensive homes paying disproportionately more. A Band D household in Hartlepool pays over £1,000 more each year than one in Westminster, despite vastly different property values.
Meanwhile, Stamp Duty discourages people from moving, making it harder for families to find suitable homes, older people to downsize and first-time buyers to get onto the housing ladder.
Nearly two-thirds of Britons say Council Tax is unfair, while arrears are now over £9 billion. Recent Budget measures have tinkered with the system rather than addressed its fundamental problems.
With the Government developing its 10-year plan, now is the time to act.
Our ask is simple: Commission a full, independent, evidence-led review of two taxes that no government would design today.
What you can do
A debate is only as powerful as the MPs who turn up. A packed room, with MPs from every party saying the system is broken, is far harder for the Government to ignore than a handful of empty benches.
Please email your MP and ask them to attend the debate on 23 November, and if possible make the case for property tax reform.
It takes less than two minutes and we’ve drafted the email for you. Just enter your postcode, add your name and hit send.
