Today, Politics Home published an Op-Ed by Jonathan Brash, Labour MP for Hartlepool, urging the Prime Minister not to kick the can down the road on property tax reform in the upcoming Budget.
Brash points out that Hartlepool’s average Band D Council Tax bill is around £2,556 a year, against roughly £1,047 in Westminster, where homes are worth far more – about six times as much.
He argues that a system still built on 1991 valuations places an unfair burden on families in less affluent areas. Drawing on Fairer Share’s modelling, he sets out how a Proportional Property Tax could leave 77% of households better off and keep more money in local high streets.
He calls on the Government to announce a comprehensive review of Council Tax and Stamp Duty ahead of the Budget.
